Part 1 - Is tourism a threat ?
Tourism, undoubtedly a crucial economic driver for many destinations, is a double-edged sword. It brings prosperity but can also strain the very places we hold dear.
In this piece, we'll delve into Ladakh, often referred to as India's Moonland 🚵🌚, a cherished destination on every traveler's list. As its popularity soars, so do the challenges it faces. A prime concern is the limited water supply, which has prompted the use of dry toilets for generations. However, the surge in new resorts boasting flush toilets and pools has raised a critical question: is Ladakh's beloved landscape at risk?
Ladakh's fragile ecosystem faces a formidable challenge. Its arid terrain and limited water resources are pushed to their limits by the surge in tourism. The demand for water, especially during peak seasons, strains local supplies, risking depletion and long-term damage. With more footfalls come more waste. Tragically, some areas near iconic spots like Pangong Lake have become dumping grounds. Inadequate waste management facilities risk tarnishing Ladakh's pristine beauty and threaten its unique biodiversity.
